A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy the discovery style of teaching through labs and scientific literature instead of the customary lecture/reading/assessment programs. I also like to provide many different ways for students to be successful.
I have a degree in Biology Education/Science Education from Central Washington University and did hold a Washington State teaching certificate in Biology and General Science until I moved down to California in 2000. My certificate enabled me to teach any secondary school science class. In addition to Biology I have extensive coursework in Physics and Chemistry as well as classes in Astronomy, Geology, Paleontology and other scientific pursuits. I did long-term substitute teaching in Washington along with teaching General Biology at Yakima Valley Community College in Yakima, WA.

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching styles are as diverse as students in the classroom. Given that fact, differentiated instruction is necessary because no two students learn alike. Building background, accessing prior knowledge, and learning student's frames of reference are important steps for a teacher to take in order to determine how a student learns. I strive to develop relationships with my students to better serve their learning needs. Knowing their cultural and social realities gives meaning and relevance to their learning. The constructivist approach helps build on that knowledge and enables the student to make sense of new knowledge.
I began my career in education in 1993 as an Instructional Aide. That experience cemented my desire to be a teacher. Since that time I have devoted myself to getting the education necessary for that dream to come true.I now have a Bachelor's in English, and a Master's ... read more

More About This Tutor...

My high school education was comprised of "alternative" education and a summer semester at Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. Between 1983 and 1989, as a long-term substitute teacher for the ROP (in CA), I taught Computer Sciences (which included Elementary Math and Algebra)at Anderson Valley High School in Boonville CA. As a full-time teacher, I taught Culinary Arts for the ROP for four years at the Fort Bragg High School, Fort Bragg, CA. I tutored students off-hours on an ongoing basis during my tenure as a teacher. For the purpose of this application, I am very interested in tutoring learners in English. I excelled in English in school and have tutored others in English. Throughout my years, professionally and within my personal life and avocation, I have always aspired to learn and to help others learn.
I still subscribe to some fundamental education axioms. Paramount ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I graduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine with a BA in history and minors in biology and psychology. Earning a history degree required me to write several essays, including a thirty-page research paper, and this experience made me a better writer (and eventually, a better teacher). After graduating, I worked at a tutoring center for over a year, teaching English and history to K-12 students and math to K-6 students. I also prepared students for AP history tests and the reading and writing components of the SAT. My professional responsibilities included devising lesson plans, assigning homework, grading essays, writing progress reports, and running a debate club for fourth, fifth, and sixth graders.
I enjoy tutoring because I find it rewarding to build relationships with students and observe their progress. I recognize that it is crucial to build rapport with s ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I first started teaching in 2003 as a substitute to supplement the income from my guiding business during the slower portion of the year. After showing that I was very capable in the classroom and could quickly develop a strong rapport with coworkers and students, I was hired for the year when another teacher left unexpectedly. I went to school for the next year at the University of Kentucky, did not finish my degree, but earned enough credits to be hired by to teach in their Alternative School. I taught and was a leader and innovator at Cropper Alternative School for the next five years, until I decided to move to this part of the country after a recent divorce. I have been tutoring here since.
Everyone has style of teaching that is unique. Mine is at first appearance very laid back, but on closer inspection is very powerful and extremely effective in the long run. My strategy as ... read more
