The majority of my experience lies in classroom settings of 20-35 students. Although, I thoroughly enjoy one-on-one teaching as well. The first step in developing a teaching style for a specific student is to assess their needs and their learning styles. From that, tutoring can be tailored to each students specific needs.
I initially got my start as an English tutor for refugees in the Chattanooga, Tennessee area in 2002. I use all methods of second language acquisition in my teaching. Most of the exercises I use to help beginning are communicative methods. It's better to get them speaking and writing and build their confidence than to just use rote memorization or drills. If I think the audio-lingual method will help a more advanced student, I suggest and practice this method with them. If reading in the language with the translation side by side helps, we will practice that. I bear all forms of cognitive learning in mind when tutoring a student. I strive to help in whatever way I can.
