I am a firm believer that strict memorization does not allow the student to broaden their ability to solve problems of various flavors. I encourage the student to understand the concepts to avoid tedious memorization. Additionally I believe children learn best in an environment where they do not feel intimidated or nervous. I believe by working closely with the student and making learning fun I can help the student avoid becoming discouraged. This helps to prevent the chain reaction of test failures. It also prevents the student from giving up on the subject.

I believe all students have the ability to learn. It is my job as the teacher to find out what makes a student "click". I have learned through my experiences that connecting subject matter to a student's interests will ensure the student learns. All students need to feel successful!

More About This Tutor...

Education is the process of guiding children or adults in the experience of learning meaning of things. In other words, teaching words without establishing a proper sense of the meaning of those words dulls the intellectual life. I believe everyone can learn if they are encouraged to seek the significance of the subject they are learning. Moreover, each time a child improves in regard to their motives and vitality while learning, a greater sense of accomplishment can be experienced by both the teacher and the student.
Presently, I work as a teacher's assistant in special education. I earned a BA in English Literature from one of the finest private colleges in the Southeast. My goal is to provide the best educational experience for my students. I truly enjoy working with young people and helping them learn. I believe that all children can learn regardless of abilities and backgrounds when provided with the appropriate learning environment. I also believe that each child is unique and has different styles of learning, and how these students learn should be incorporated as part of their learning experience to help these students reach their academic potential. I am a strong believer in the constructivist approach to learning and will use this approach whenever appropriate to assist students in their learning experiences.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style can be called old-fashioned: the best results come from patient, focused, disciplined time on task. To learn math one must work a variety of problems, and practice them diligently. My strength as a tutor is my ability to explain the algorithms in a way that students can easily grasp. This includes the vitally important requirement of why the problem is worked the way it is, not simply how.
I taught high-school math for 14 years, everything from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, in both public and private schools. I also have extensive writing experience, including for many newspapers, and am currently teaching Political Science at the Community-College level. Thus, I could tutor math, and/or any subject or assignment that required verbal and writing skills. I tutored UTK athletes in math and philosophy, and proctored Pre-Calculus at UTK as well.

I have training in the Balanced Literacy program in which the word study, reading objectives, and writers' workshop are combined in a one and a half hour block of student driven, teacher facilitated activities. These are ultimately shared in a whole group and or one on one setting. When tutoring, I do a very brief mini lesson on the objective and we go immediatley into the task at hand with instant feedback and adaptation between the reader or writer and myself as we progress through the lesson. If the student is hung on vowel digraphs, we stop and examine those and do word work with several examples. My next choices for them to read would have more vowel digraphs. If my student is confused about where to put the punctuation in a quotation, we will do several real world scenerios where he will write statements, questions, and exclaimations correcting as we go along. These are just a f ... read more

I believe all children can learn. I will never give up on a child. I have the patience and persistence to help every child learn, and a willingness to adjust my teaching to the child’s individual learning style. Children need to feel accepted and feel secure. Children need to be treated fairly and given encouragement and praise. I believe diversity should be respected and welcomed. Children need to be listened to with an open mind. I will not be judgmental; but, will, instead, be compassionate and understanding. I will provide a learning environment where children feel safe to take risks and make mistakes. At the University of Tennessee every student is expected to fulfill certain core curriculum requirements in any degree program. As an AP student in high school, I tested out of U.S. History and freshman English/Composition. I tested out of the first year of Spanish via UT's foreign language placement exams as well. With 18 "free" credits under my belt from day one, I was able to pursue my love for writing in the journalism program. I have earned a BS in communications giving me pratical hands-on editing and writing skills, be it creative, technical, or persuasive. I completed my internship year at Farragut High School, where I taught both freshman and junior year writing and literature.

A Little Bit About Me...

When teaching, I want to instill in each child a love for learning. I do this, first of all, by setting the mood of the classroom - meaning, I make it conducive for learning with an attitude of happiness and respect for each child; believing that I can find attributes that I like about each child, and making the atmosphere pleasant, cozy, and fun. Secondly, I instill the class rules with positive outcomes so the environment is always positive. Usually this takes about a week of consistency, then my class is ready to take off! Once they know the rules, know you are going to be consistent, and enjoy coming to your classroom, then, learning is fun!
