I have 30 years experience in Elementary Education. I have taught grades 2-8 in a self-contained and block scheduled school. I served as Asst. I have training in the Balanced Literacy program in which the word study, reading objectives, and writers' workshop are combined in a one and a half hour block of student driven, teacher facilitated activities. These are ultimately shared in a whole group and or one on one setting. When tutoring, I do a very brief mini lesson on the objective and we go immediatley into the task at hand with instant feedback and adaptation between the reader or writer and myself as we progress through the lesson. If the student is hung on vowel digraphs, we stop and examine those and do word work with several examples. My next choices for them to read would have more vowel digraphs. If my student is confused about where to put the punctuation in a quotation, we will do several real world scenerios where he will write statements, questions, and exclaimations correcting as we go along. I am a firm believer that strict memorization does not allow the student to broaden their ability to solve problems of various flavors. I encourage the student to understand the concepts to avoid tedious memorization. Additionally I believe children learn best in an environment where they do not feel intimidated or nervous. I believe by working closely with the student and making learning fun I can help the student avoid becoming discouraged. This helps to prevent the chain reaction of test failures. A Little Bit About Me...

I taught high-school math for 14 years, everything from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, in both public and private schools. I also have extensive writing experience, including for many newspapers, and am currently teaching Political Science at the Community-College level. Thus, I could tutor math, and/or any subject or assignment that required verbal and writing skills. I tutored UTK athletes in math and philosophy, and proctored Pre-Calculus at UTK as well.
My teaching style can be called old-fashioned: the best results come from patient, focused, disciplined time on task. To learn math one must work a variety of problems, and practice them diligently. My strength as a tutor is my ability to explain the algorithms in a way that students can easily grasp. This includes the vitally important requirement of why the problem is worked the way it is, not simply how.
