I enjoy working with students. It seems that, in most cases, tutoring is essentially a confidence-builiding exercise. Yes, it's anout instructional leadership, but it's more about showing a student they can really achieve what they're setting out to do. I taught high-school math for 14 years, everything from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, in both public and private schools. I also have extensive writing experience, including for many newspapers, and am currently teaching Political Science at the Community-College level. My teaching style can be called old-fashioned: the best results come from patient, focused, disciplined time on task. To learn math one must work a variety of problems, and practice them diligently. I have training in the Balanced Literacy program in which the word study, reading objectives, and writers' workshop are combined in a one and a half hour block of student driven, teacher facilitated activities. These are ultimately shared in a whole group and or one on one setting. When tutoring, I do a very brief mini lesson on the objective and we go immediatley into the task at hand with instant feedback and adaptation between the reader or writer and myself as we progress through the lesson. If the student is hung on vowel digraphs, we stop and examine those and do word work with several examples. My next choices for them to read would have more vowel digraphs. When getting my Bachelor's degree, English was my chosen major. I chose the subject because I love to read and write, and excel at both of those things. In high school and college, I tutored middle and high school - aged children. I was able to find and help those kids because my parents were teachers; thus, so were their friends who needed tutors.
