I understand that all children learn differently and I am able to adapt my teaching style to fit the child. I am both patient and positive and I like to give the student confidence. I believe that too many students find math challenging because of the way they are taught. Too many teachers have made it not fun and frustrating and are unwilling to explain the "whys", which can make a big difference to a child. This may be due to lack of understanding on the teacher's part, but I believe strongly that a solid education, especially in all areas of math, will help with problem solving and many other "real life" situations that can arise. Because many students learn visually, I've always tried to incorporate varying levels of geometry in my lessons. I do not use common classroom practices in teaching. Activity and creativity are at the heart of learning. When learning is fun, children will retain concepts and not constantly ask, "Why am I learning this?" I try to create a practical way to use concepts learned in school. Here are a few examples. For a twelve year old boy studying geometry, we might play basket ball to calculate the best angles for a free-throw. For a nine year old girl, I might teach her to do a handstand to learn about simple machines and science. Learning is fun...if you know how to play.
