I put myself through college tutoring all levels of math from basic mathematics to advanced calcusus (though I never did like trig). I've been an award-winning professional website designer/developer for 16 years.

My comments on tutoring American History : Bachelor of Arts, teaching credential.

Recognizing as does William Glasser that students perform and learn in school only when their “basic needs” are met, students need a structured environment to allow them to focus on learning, but the central goal of schools is to provide students with intellectual tools to understand the physical and social worlds around them. Standards must be related to the lives of students so that they can become intrinsically motivated. Standards must be packaged and encapsulated as “essential ideas” to make them meaningful and accessible. Curriculum needs to be made exciting and relevant so that intrinsically motivated student can make it their own, and rigorous and challenging so that students are motivated and empowered to learn.

I have tutored English as a second language to foreign students at the University of California, Riverside. I like to make learning fun by teaching according to what my students like. For instance, with the little girl I tutored, I knew that she was a visual learner and that she loved art and music so I gave her a mnemonic device in a form a song she liked to help her remember verb conjugations. I also made flashcards for her to remember fruits and vegetables as well as articles of clothing. I will make tutoring more creative because it makes fun and I feel that when kids have fun while learning, they remember more.
I have always helped people with their homework, particularly in when it comes to English and elementary math. I worked for wyzant.com for four months, where I tutored a little girl in Spanish and it was really fun, but ultimately she had too much on her plate so I stopped. A year later the father of the girl I tutored before asked me to come back, but by then I had a full-ti ... read more

My teaching style involves a positive approach. I believe students learn best in an environment that is both positive and challenging. Positive feedback is essential because students are encouraged to take risks and solve problems. A challenging classroom teaches critical thinking skills that are necessary for the global market.

Education is extremely important to me. As an educator, I think it is important to not only share one's knowledge, but to be able to adapt one's teaching style for each student. Through my experience, I know it is important to have patience and be open-minded with my students. I enjoy tutoring and being a positive role model to all my students.

I love to motivate and present information, that is unique. For example, what note or bill is the lowest denomination ever printed and has the portrait of George Washington on it? If you gave me the obvious answer of the one-dollar bill, than that would be the wrong answer. The correct answere is the three-cent note printed in 1862. The bill is still legal tender, although it is worth a lot more as a collector's item. I make my students think. For example, what would happen to you, if you took off your spacesuit on Mars? I'm run ... read more

I am very patient, caring, and thoughtful. Preperation by both student and tutor will encourage success. I strive to make a difference and provide tools for the future success of the student or team member. We shouldn't just feed the student "fish" but also teach them how to fish.

Throughout my college years I have been employed by two different after school programs for a combined amount of 6 years tutoring/teaching in public school after school programs. (Grades K-6) I also spent 2 months teaching full time 3rd and 4th grade after college prior to unfortunately being laid off due to financial losses in the school. I also tutored English in college through an Advanced English class I was placed in.
