I use the heuristic style - teach a little; now you try it! The student learns best what they learn from within. At my English boarding school, that is the way we were taught, and it worked. Also, I show them different study methods to see what works for them. I have read widely on psychology. Early on, I assess a student's best learning mode - visual, aural, spatial, numerical, verbal, etc., and play to it. While being active in drama I learned how to 'read' the hearers and viewers. Any level of Mathematics!

As a student, I was gifted in math. I went through school rarely scoring anything lower than a 95 in math courses. I routinely tested in the 99 percentile on standardized test, and as a 6th grader test showed I was already on the 11th grade level. I finished several college math courses with a 105 average. I started tutoring math in January of 2001. I have tutoring from k-12 and college students also in courses that include basic math, pre algebra, algebra, calculus, geometry, trigonometry, and SAT math. I believe that kids learn best when they have incentive, whether it is something they relate to or something they find interesting. I believe few will find homework interesting, unless it is relatable to their daily lives. I like to facilitate the process and let the child make his/her own discovery with minimal intrusion by the instructor. Self discovery is more satisfying than using a force fed method of rote learning.
