I am a former mathematics teacher who is interested in returning to the profession. I have both tutored and taught the subject in the past, and have test scores that demonstrate my current proficiency. Recently, I finished a "refresher" graduate-level course at UNR, and am independently reading an assortment of literature from NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) and others.
Mathematics is a field that extends beyond a series of procedures as it taught far too widely these days. My stress is on conceptual understanding, as it is the key to understanding the subject. Even moreso than the procedures that we have been accustomed to viewing as being the core of Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus, conceputal underpinnings are what the make the subject meaningful.

A Little Bit About Me...

I emphasize meaning in my instructional style. Rather than, say, inculcate a formula for comma us, I try to convey how comma use provides meaningful structure to an idea, i.e. the sentence. In the larger sphere of things, I believe in showing a student how a piece of literature--which may well include his or her own writing--is meaningful to himself. When this is accomplished, I have found that the "meaning" of the work provides the necessary impetus to motivate the student. As academic success is so inextricably linked with qualities such as interest and pertinacity, I emphasize the root cause: meaning.

Born and raised in upstate New York, I graduated from Cornell University in the spring of 2000 with a B.S. in Biology. In 2003, after a short stay in the biotechnology world, I moved west to work for an outdoor science school in Southern California.
