I emphasize meaning in my instructional style. Rather than, say, inculcate a formula for comma us, I try to convey how comma use provides meaningful structure to an idea, i.e. the sentence. In the larger sphere of things, I believe in showing a student how a piece of literature--which may well include his or her own writing--is meaningful to himself. When this is accomplished, I have found that the "meaning" of the work provides the necessary impetus to motivate the student. Born and raised in upstate New York, I graduated from Cornell University in the spring of 2000 with a B.S. in Biology. In 2003, after a short stay in the biotechnology world, I moved west to work for an outdoor science school in Southern California. Since then, I have had the pleasure of traveling all over the country and working with a variety of successful environmental education programs, summer camps, and adventure programs.
