I'm a very laid back casual sort of fellow that likes to make someone think about how to solve problems efficiently. I won't just blurt out an answer to a question hoping they pick up, hands on working through a problem is the best way I've found to solve computer problems. Teaching the student "where" to look to find answers is big help too, there is reference material out on the web for ANY business related task you can think of. I have 20+ years of real world business IT experience. Most of that was programming on IBM iSeries/AS400 mini computers in RPG or COBOL. The last 6 or 7 years has been devoted to learning HTML & PHP in my spare time. The languages aren't important, what is key is learning to break complex tasks down into smaller chunks and think logically about how to link all these smaller tasks into a program to accomplish the overall goal.

My teaching style is very matter-of-fact and flexible. Some students learn by listening, others by reading, and still more by doing. It is my job to determine which students need which type of teaching. It's important to never let the student feel I am judging his abilities in a negative manner while still making sure he learns from his mistakes. When getting my Bachelor's degree, English was my chosen major. I chose the subject because I love to read and write, and excel at both of those things. In high school and college, I tutored middle and high school - aged children. I was able to find and help those kids because my parents were teachers; thus, so were their friends who needed tutors. Starting in high school, I began to tutor grade school and middle school students through an after-school honors program. I have worked with (primarily middle school) students in several volunteer programs through church youth ministries. I had recently held a position as Music Director for Middle School Ministry at Willow Creek Community Church in Dupage, IL for 13 months. I believe learning is about confidence. I have seen numerous students doing poorly in courses because they were convinced that they were not capable of learning the subject matter. Small successes help to build confidence in order to move on to the subsequent challenges.
