Better academics combined with more fun is the goal.

I have helped friends (and their children) to prepare for exams since when in high school I won various awards for my performance on exams. I won the top score for the Regents exam for Duval County in 1971 and for this I was recognized by the downtown Rotary Club. Also I won the top statewide scholarship award for the Chamber of Commerce and for the N.H.S. due to performance on exams. Also I won the Merit Scholarship award. I have only recently started to do tutoring for pay. Over the years I have helped my children, my grandchildren, and friends and others to prepare for exams ranging from kindergarten phonics up to and beyond SAT exams.
I consider it my duty to do what it takes to make the tutoring FUN for the person being tutored.

My comments on tutoring SAT - Math : I have tutored several students in math. I am a certified teacher in both math and physics.

I enjoy teaching and working with children. While I believe that all children can learn, they do so in their own ways and at their own pace. It is the tutor’s responsibility to ensure that the student(s) understand the material. It is important to show students how one idea builds on the last. I will help your child learn the material in his/her own way. I consider myself to be patient, non-judgmental, and knowledgeable of the subject matter. I truly believe all children can meet their potential if they are given the appropriate surroundings and learning experiences. I am very proud of the kind letters of thanks that I have received from parents of some of my students this year.

A Little Bit About Me...

All students have the ability to learn, but they do not learn the same way. It is the job of the teacher or tutor to evaluate each child's learning style and adapt the lessons or activities to the student's individual needs, so that they can be successful. Over the years, I have learned many ways to adapt lessons and meet these necessary needs. I am patient, creative, and determined to enable students to learn. I have learned to modify my techniques if they do not meet the needs of the student. I have a positive attitude and expect success when I work with my students. It is such a wonderful experience to assist a student in achieving success!

A good description of my teaching style sould be very descriptive, and easy to follow. I break down the math into a series of steps, and practice them until they are mastered. For the students that have already decided that they hate math, I try to excite them with topics that they can relate to, such as sports, or cooking. We both make compromises, and I offer treats, or other incentives.
In high school I served as a big sister, and that's when I gained my passion for kids, and the importance of educating others. That experience led me to apply for a service scholarship which I earned to attend Florida State University. In college I volunteered at a local elementary school, following a group of students as their tutor until I graduated college. This service led to the beginning of my teaching career in Broward County. I sponsored an after school step team, and served as ... read more

I am a visiual learner but I understand that all students learn differently. So, I like to change the way I teach to the needs of the student and constantly turning the tables of their questions with questions that make them think and answer for themselves. I can read and write upside down very fluently and I believe this helps the students understanding. I have been voted teacher of the month continuously and students request me by name frequently. Professional experience started with enlistment in the U.S navy in the year 2000, as a helicopter mechanic for 5 years. After an honorable discharge I've been an employee of Florida State College at Jacksonville as an instructional assistant in math and computers. Following this experience I was hired as an Arabic all call interpreter with language line in Monterey California. This job had to be terminated for the required student teaching experience that only ended in may 2010.

Because each student learns in different way, I use many things on class. Using short demonstrations, drawings, diagram of the situation, and/or computer simulations, the students discover the concept by themselves. They traduce and solve it mathematically. Expand the idea to general cases by generating a graph. The use of technology, InFocus or vertical projector, electronic board, and the classroom like a laboratory give the students good tools for understanding. They have the opportunity to discuss the assignments, and communicate with me at any moment using the Blackboard.

As a teacher, I firmly believe in teaching using all modalities. In large group instruction, I speak and use visual aids simultanously, usually color-coding and using images. This is followed up with hands-on experience, when applicable. When tutoring, I work to assess my students primary learning styles and prepare my lesson plan accordingly.
Before, during, and after my college graduation, I tutored fellow students having difficulty in math, particularly Algebra. When I began teaching, I not only tutored my own students after school, but I also tutored children on weekends and summer break. When teaching high school, I worked in after-school programs with an emphasis on Geometry. I have also tutored private individuals in Geometry, and have been quite successful in assisting them in raising their standardized test scores.
