Every student has a unique combination of learning styles, but he or she also has a predominant one such as visual learner, kinesthetic learner, etc. I try to figure out which style or styles the student responds to and use those styles to get through to the student. I also have the student explain the problem to me. Usually there is only one area where the student has gone astray in his or her thinking. By explaining the problem to me, I can see what he is and is not “getting.” Then we can concentrate only on what the student does not know. When I became a mom, I decided to home school my kids so that I could take an active part in their education and I could guide them in ways that someone else might not find interesting or important. I love to learn and everyone learns differently. I believe that if the information is not being understood one way, then we need to find another way to instruct. Hands-on learning and learning through experience always leaves a lasting impression.
