I feel that the most important step to being an effective teacher is to make the material relevant. If the student does not see a relevant reason to learn the material, the learning curve will be much steeper. Then, I work hard to be sure the student understands my commitment to partner with him/her in the learning process, and that process is a two-way street. The subject that students need the most help with is math. I have noticed the differences in difficulty when trying grasp mathematical concepts and have found ways to somewhat cater to their specific trouble areas. It is very important to give lots of examples and practice problems.
