A Little Bit About Me...

I have a bachelor’s degree from UC Davis in Renewable Natural Resources and a Clear Single Subject Credential in Biological Sciences and Foundational Math (all but calculus). I have home schooled my children, worked in a private school both tutoring and teaching and taught in a public high school over the last 22 years. My educational philosophy includes the belief that all students are able to learn, but they must be active participants in their own learning--they must be engaged. From my time as a reading tutor to struggling readers in middle school, I understand the importance of first assessing a student's abilities in basic literacy (phonemic awareness, letter sounds and blending, concepts of print, recall & comprehension, etc.). Obviously, my approach to readers with greater skills would be different and would include both formal and informal assessments of reading skill. It's my goal to produce strategic readers. Because of my work with persons who have physical and mental problems, I have learned to be patient and sharpen my listening skills. This way I am also able to recognize when someone is frustrated or exhausted and use these signs to better cope with any behavioral problems that may arise.
