15 years experience in a broad variety of subjects!

I have a way of perceiving the difficulty the student has, and am able to explain the material in a simple way that makes it easy for students to grasp. I have a good rapport with my student and have had several that have told me that I am the best teacher they have ever had(which didn't hurt my ego!!) I also have a good sense of humor which puts students at ease- and it is proven that a tense mind can not learn, only when the student loses their anxiety over the material will they absorb it!
I have been tutoring for over 15 years both in students homes or at public locations such as coffee shops or the public library. My education and experience are broad. I was educated at "Ivy League" level schools and purposefully educated myself in a large variety of the humanities, which in essence all tie together. Basic courses up through most High School material outside of the Humanit ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught middle and high school students science since 1987. I have a BA in Biology and am certified to teach high school biology and chemistry and middle grade science. I recently completed level 1 and level 2 of my reading endorsement courses, and have used that while I tutor elementary students in reading.
I am a hands-on type of science teacher. I believe that there's more to learning than just from the book, so to speak. My goal is to give students the help that they need with which to succeed. I like to teach via real life examples and real life applications. I truly believe that students who read succeed, so I also have a great interest in helping the younger students succeed with reading.

I believe that you have to be very hands on and provide more than one style of teaching. One needs to be able to teach for the visual and auditory sensory by being able to provide visuals but then also to describe the material in multiple ways.
I would aid as an assistant tutor in many of my undergraduate classes and help lead study groups before test. I would also review the test in a post test study group to help people understand why they did not fully understand the question either how it was worded or if they just completely missed the question all together but ultimately help prepare for a midterm or final. Since my mother is a high school science teacher I would also go into her classroom and help her in the classroom and lab to be able to help provide the students more one on one attention and elaborate and simplify some of the material that was being taught.

As a Social Worker, I have gained many skills in working with people. My field has allowed me to gain experience teaching in a variety of settings. I have taught students at the high school level in the areas of health education and general academic support. I had the experience of working as a Coordinator in a bi-lingual school in Guatemala which gave me the opportunity to be in the classroom guiding teachers and modeling techniques. As a student, I entered the field of biology both personally and professionally with a great deal of focus and dedication, acquiring not only a bachelors degree in biology, but accepting both teaching and research positions that allowed me to gain a wide range of experience in the field as well. As a teacher, I have had experience instructing marine biology to students from grade four through college in Florida, California, Costa Rica, Belize, Tahiti, Fiji, and New Zealand, delivering hands-on lectures and activities with topics ranging from coral reef ecology in the tropics to kelp forest biology in the frigid waters off Santa Catalina Island. However, my skills are not confined to marine biology. I have also had experience tutoring HS biology as well, covering a range of topics from genetics to invertebrate zoology to human anatomy and physiology.

I have enjoyed the opportunity to teach students to excel at several different levels during my career as a research scientist. As a graduate student, I tutored and mentored students in the local middle school science research class. Upon completing my Ph.D. I designed and taught college courses, and have more recently taught a year of science at the high school level. I have always been good at explaining difficult technical concepts in science and math, but also have a strong writing and editing background, and feel that is also an area that I am strong in from an experience/ educational perspective.
I have had some very patient and supportive teachers and mentors throughout my education, which extended well into my adulthood. As a result, I tend to be very compassionate, understanding, and supportive of the students that I have taught and mentored. I tend to be thorough, provi ... read more

I believe all children are capable of learning. We need to adjust to help everyone learn. Student- centered learning and constructivism are key components in student learning. Once again, my personal belief of education is "You only get out what you put in".

A Little Bit About Me...

My approach to tutoring is one of patience, practice and fun. I believe in staying on topic but also be available to detour to relevant topics that may broaden the application of the subject being studied. Through the use of computers, research and practical examples, my students are given different approaches to enhance their study skills. For me, learning any new subject begins with learning its language. For example, in math and science, vocabulary and usage are keys to understanding processes basic to any application. Finally, I welcome the opportunity to explore you or your child's talents, helping to identify and adapt a personal style of learning to ensure educational success. )

While I was in college I began working as a teachers assistant at a Montessori School, I soon started privately tutoring students after school at the same location. I am a very hard working, organized, and outgoing person. I tutored students in Math, English, History, Behavioral Sciences and also taught private dance lessons.
I was raised in the Montessori teaching environment, so I am very involved with hands-on teaching methods, and relating subjects to real life experiences. I enjoy watching children grow and progress into self-motivated, independent individuals, who are self-confident in many areas. I believe all children no matter what age have the potential to do amazingly well in school and with their education depending on how much individual attention is placed on them, including constant positive reinforcement.

I feel students learn best when they are engaged and interested in the topic. I think relating a topic in a practical and applied approach helps many students retain and apply the information they have learned. Some students work best with "Hands-on" activities (especially for kinesthetic learners), and some students are visual or auditory learners. It's important for me to provide a healthy mixture of these learning styles to make sure the student is reaching their full potential.

A Little Bit About Me...

The students of today will be the first generation to collaborate on a global scale and it will be necessary that they have an understanding of cultures other than their own if they are to succeed. This is where I feel that having knowledge of history and current events plays a crucial role. I believe that to truly know where you are going you have to understand where you have come from. I fully intend to give my students the experiences they need to become knowledgeable partners in the global community.
The two main philosophies I try to live my life by are giving back more than what has been given to me, and always leave something in better condition then I found it. Life has not always been an easy road, but through hard work and determination I have risen above any adversity life has presented. I believe the juxtaposition of these philosophies with the leadership skills acquire ... read more
