Young people learn through different ways and means. I try to discern the best method to instruct any particular student with whom I am tutoring at the time. I like to give examples of problems, and "problem solve" with the student through illustrative examples on paper or on the board. I encourage questions and feedback to ensure that the young person is indeed learning "how" to solve a problem, not simply to "get" a solution. A student's practical demonstration of problem solving is the best gauge to determine if that student is indeed learning or not. A Little Bit About Me...

As a tutor, I was encouraging, supportive and sensitive to my students' feelings. For example, I normally met my students at the library. One student kept missing his initial session. I figured out that he was too intimidated by the library itself to meet me there. So, we had regular lessons in the park, where he felt comfortable and was therefore receptive to learning. Ultimately, I strived to make each session a positive experience, so that my students would leave feeling good about themselves.
