Certified Teacher Looking To Help Others As A Tutor

I have a wide variety of educational experience and have recently crossed over into the realm of education as a Special Education/At-Risk teacher with the Edgerton School District. My current position has me utilizing differentiated instruction and modification techniques with nearly 50 students throughout the day which will enhance my ability to tutor others who need help. My particular areas of expertise are Social Studies, Spanish, English and ASVAB/GED test prep. I am weaker in Math and Science.
I prefer to have materials prepared prior to any tutoring session so communication ahead of time will be essential. If I have an idea of what is expected of me then I am able to help modify the session to fit the learner. I like to use both direct teach as well as discussion to help guide the tutoring session.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a compassionate person who will do whatever it takes to help students succeed. I always encourage my students to ask as many questions as they need to so that they have a firm understanding of the material. I love seeing the growth in the individual student. Students who have had me as a teacher report that they thought they were incapable of doing math but after taking my course their confidence has exceeded their expectations.
I am a certified 6 - 12 Secondary Mathematics teacher. I have been teaching for 10 years with my last four being at the college level. I have been awarded the Who's Who a number of times. I just received my master's degree in mathematics from Marquette this spring.

Obtaining a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering has exposed me to advanced courses of Math and Science, two subjects which have always fascinated me. I have pursued and achieved excellence in these areas all through my school years and my post graduation career as an industrial engineer has only advanced my knowledge in these areas. English language has been a strong interest of mine since an early age and I have actively cultivated that interest. Cumulatively, including extended substitute teaching situations, I have taught all grade levels 1-12 in various subjects. I would describe my teaching style as ecclectic. By this I mean that I discern which style or strategy would best accomdodate the needs of the particular child, based on their learning style. Once the child's learning style is distinguished, I would tailor my lessons/tutoring to that particular style.
Throughout college, I consistently worked as a tutor or mentor, specifically with minority populations. Upon graduation, I joined Teach for America and taught high school English in rural North Carolina. Since my tenure in TFA, I have taught English to students in Mexico, substitue taught for 2 years at a Waldorf school in La Crosse, WI, and currently tutor and mentor students as I attend graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

I enjoy helping people find and understand information. When teaching, I like to encourage my students to find their own path and reasoning to the answer. I encourage supervised and structured trial and error where the student tries different methods to finding the answer. This nurtures the excitement of discovery and the joy of learning something new.
First, I am a life long learner and love reading. I have a masters in Library Science and have worked for the past 2 years as a reference librarian where I frequently answered questions, worked with patrons one on one, taught ACT prep and computer classes.
