I use the material that the student is familiar with to enhance the students understanding of the principles and processes that are being emphasized. I bring supplemental material for the subject area and use it as needed. Primarily, the student works problems or exercises that are required in front of me. The student verbalizes the steps and thinking processes about the subject so that I can correct fundamentals and errors in logic. Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day.
