A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a teacher for 15 years in East St. Louis, Il School District 189. Over those years I have taught 1st grade for two years, and Middle School Grades 6-8 Language Arts, Reading, and Social Studies. I have also served as a Homebound Instructor for Elementary, Middle School, and High School Students for 3 years. In addition I have served as an after school tutor for 4 years with the YMCA and Sylvan Learning Center. I was basketball coach for 2 years for 4th and 5th grade students previously. Finally I served as the Chairman over the Real Men Read Program at Lincoln Middle School for 4 years.

My comments on tutoring English : I've been teaching Basic English to foreign students.

After finishing my 1st year in college, I started tutoring both online and offline. I have been working as an ESL Teacher for Chinese at different ages. My ESL teaching style includes an approach called 'whole language learning', which includes reading, writing, speaking, and listening. I also implement interactive learning (i.e. conversation and dialogues, interactive websites, etc.) and learning through play/games. I always adapt my teaching methods to my students' learning styles, whether they be auditory, visual, TPR, tactile, or analytic learners.
As a certified TESL instructor, I have worked as an ESL teacher for Aston English in Weihai, China for the past 12 months. Before my time teaching abroad, I volunteered in an English learning class at Ozark Technical Community College in Springfield, Missouri. I have over 20 years experience teaching in Japan.

I like to make the classes a lot of fun, with a lot of laughter, because I realised when I was still in high school that the fun classes stayed in my mind and I learned more in them. I also tend to befriend my students, against the conventional wisdom that there should be a wall between. If they are relaxed and can trust me, they will also learn better.
