Starting as a part time peer tutor at the Lehigh Carbon Community College and then moving to Kaplan Premier as an SAT Math tutor, and later to full time Math teacher in Northeast Philadelphia, PA, I enjoyed working with students of all levels and ages. Every student has a potential to learn and grow at his or her own rate. I use a very interactive teaching style which encourages students to think out a problem and to understand it in a way that makes most sense to them. I use analogies to make more complex concepts more accessible to the student, and as a way to help them to learn and understand the concepts.
After 18 years in the pharmaceutical and medical fields I have set my sights to earning my teaching certification. I am a father of three, a Volunteer Fire Fighter and self described science buff. I am looking to tutor to help students to fine their love of science and also to help them build the study skills that will help to make school easier and improve grades.

A Little Bit About Me...

I've tutored kids within the inner cities of Atlanta, through a program called Emory reads. As a tutor I was responsible for helping them with their homework which included all subjects. I've also served as a teacher's aid, my responsibility was to ensure that the kids paid attention and address any problems in understanding that came up during the lesson.
I use a lot of repetition and the asking of questions to ensure that students are learning concepts. I also try to give them analogies to help them remember things. I love working with children, as the oldest in a big family, I have often served as caretaker while my father is at work. I currently have an 8 year old younger brother who I'm working with as well as one in his Sophomore year of High school. I'm helping him with algebra and pre-calc.

I love working with students and teaching them something new. The best feeling is when someone understands a concept that they didn't before; when something "clicks" for a student, I feel as if my job as a tutor was done. I'm a very determined, persistent, caring, and patient person; all of these characteristics have helped me become a great tutor.
As a current undergraduate chemistry and honors student at Arcadia University, I was recommended to become a tutor from several of my teachers my first year in college. I became a certified CRLA tutor and started tutoring my sophomore year of college; I've been tutoring ever since. I tutor chemistry, biology, math (beginner algebra, statistics, calculus I and II), and calculus based physics.

I earned my BS in physics and spent over a year working on medical device research. As an undergraduate at the University of Pittsburgh I spent some time in the Physics Undergraduate Lab helping students in the introductory courses. I also spent time as a Team Leader for Mission Acceptance, a program that pairs successful college students with local high school students and provides mentoring in the college selection and admissions process. These experiences allowed me to learn my audience and assess their needs and also understand the mentality of high school students.
I loved working with the students in the Mission Acceptance program. I worked as a team leader, so I had the opportunity to work with a group of fellow mentors as well as students, which provided me experience with a variety of different students. I learned that each student has his or her own path to understanding ... read more

More About This Tutor...

At the start of my college career, I began tutoring for Calculus. I received an offer from a Professor at Lafayette who had heard about me. She and her husband had two children who were accellerated two years above their classmates. I tutored both children once or twice a week in both of their respective mathematics courses as well.
I love working with people, especially children. I have been a Crew Trainer at each job I've had because of my ability to relate, connect and teach others. I am very patient and easy-going. One thing I like to identify is my learner's personality so that way I may cater my teaching style to that of his/her needs. Connecting with the individual and making them feel as thought they can do, and keeping this attitude, is key to helping the student grow. Having a positive academic effect on the students' lives is what I strive to achieve.

I try to excite my student's interest about a topic before teaching it. It is human nature that we don't want to learn anything that we perceive as useless for the future, so every lesson must be relevant and applicable. When it's not, I will make it into a game, and have an external motivator associated with successful outcome of an exercise. It's all about setting attainable goals and rewarding your students for them in a way they can appreciate.
Having to live and work in a real world outside of educational system and academia has given me valuable experience, and a new appreciation for applicability of subjects I teach and tutor. As a licensed pilot I found a new meaning for knowledge physics and mathematics, which are essential in flight planning. As a real estate professional, I realized that you may have a good product but if you don't know how to package it, ... read more

During my four years at college, I tutored many other students in math and science class to help them excel in their own courses.

Teaching was not something that I sought out to do, but that happened due to paths that I took in life. My first experience came as a graduate student, where I was a TA for an undergraduate level intro media class, where I graded lecture tests, as well as taught a lab section. It was an enjoyable experience, but my interests didn't rest within teaching at the time. However, through my other endeavors in the arts & sciences, I saw how valuable it was for others to have a mentor. That is what truly interests me about teaching - the chance to help others with my own knowledge, which in turn allows me to remain sharp with my fields of interest. I believe teaching should be a hands on experience which engages both the teacher and student.
While my more formal degrees may be in the visual arts field, it is in the last year that I found my niche. Altho I had been a T.A. in graduate school ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

When teaching or tutoring a student I have found that there are several factors in how it should be approached. The most important of the factors are the subject matter and the students learning style. The learning style of the student has to be considered when teaching. Helping a student learn requires finding the most effective method. You want to make sure they understand the subject matter while exposing them to other possible ways to approach difficult problems. You can provide tools not only for the problems they are having but preparing them to handle future difficulties. Teaching can be rewarding as you help the student help themselves by discovering their own strength and weakness as well as was to improve.
Over the twelve years I attended college I acquired six degrees while maintaining high academic standards. I received a Master’s of Science Degree in Forensic Scien ... read more
