My comments on tutoring Physics : Algebra based physics

I have been tutoring since high school. I began as a tutor during summer school for students on track to graduate. Now I work as a peer tutor at SUNY Orange, tutoring a range of subjects in Math and Science primarily. I've had students recommended to me by former students, as well as former students approaching me for private tutoring if our schedules didn't fit for peer tutoring. I've run study sessions for different courses that I've taken, both for the entire class and for a small number of students.

Do Math, and You Can Do Anything - AlexMathTutoring

Starting as a part time peer tutor at the Lehigh Carbon Community College and then moving to Kaplan Premier as an SAT Math tutor, and later to full time Math teacher in Northeast Philadelphia, PA, I enjoyed working with students of all levels and ages. Every student has a potential to learn and grow at his or her own rate. I work with students at their current levels and build on what they already know in order to fill any gaps necessary for their advancement as I introduce new concepts and problems to understand and solve.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a current undergraduate chemistry and honors student at Arcadia University, I was recommended to become a tutor from several of my teachers my first year in college. I became a certified CRLA tutor and started tutoring my sophomore year of college; I've been tutoring ever since. I tutor chemistry, biology, math (beginner algebra, statistics, calculus I and II), and calculus based physics.
I love working with students and teaching them something new. The best feeling is when someone understands a concept that they didn't before; when something "clicks" for a student, I feel as if my job as a tutor was done. I'm a very determined, persistent, caring, and patient person; all of these characteristics have helped me become a great tutor.

After 18 years in the pharmaceutical and medical fields I have set my sights to earning my teaching certification. I am a father of three, a Volunteer Fire Fighter and self described science buff. I am looking to tutor to help students to fine their love of science and also to help them build the study skills that will help to make school easier and improve grades.
I use a very interactive teaching style which encourages students to think out a problem and to understand it in a way that makes most sense to them. I use analogies to make more complex concepts more accessible to the student, and as a way to help them to learn and understand the concepts.

I've tutored kids within the inner cities of Atlanta, through a program called Emory reads. As a tutor I was responsible for helping them with their homework which included all subjects. I've also served as a teacher's aid, my responsibility was to ensure that the kids paid attention and address any problems in understanding that came up during the lesson.
I use a lot of repetition and the asking of questions to ensure that students are learning concepts. I also try to give them analogies to help them remember things. I love working with children, as the oldest in a big family, I have often served as caretaker while my father is at work. I currently have an 8 year old younger brother who I'm working with as well as one in his Sophomore year of High school. I'm helping him with algebra and pre-calc.

More About This Tutor...

I try to excite my student's interest about a topic before teaching it. It is human nature that we don't want to learn anything that we perceive as useless for the future, so every lesson must be relevant and applicable. When it's not, I will make it into a game, and have an external motivator associated with successful outcome of an exercise. It's all about setting attainable goals and rewarding your students for them in a way they can appreciate.
Having to live and work in a real world outside of educational system and academia has given me valuable experience, and a new appreciation for applicability of subjects I teach and tutor. As a licensed pilot I found a new meaning for knowledge physics and mathematics, which are essential in flight planning. More About This Tutor...

While my more formal degrees may be in the visual arts field, it is in the last year that I found my niche. Altho I had been a T.A. in graduate school, I truly found my niche while working as a tutor in the Science Resource Center at the County College of Morris, where I helped students excel in General Chemistry, General Physics, Cell Biology, Microbiology and Organic Chemistry. My T.A. experience, which only lasted for a year, involved teaching lab sections for a media class, as well as grading paper for the lecture component. In addition, I have completed a masters' thesis and written many laboratory reports, allowing my knowledge to broaden and be passed to others.
Teaching was not something that I sought out to do, but that happened due to paths that I took in life. My first experience came as a graduate student, where I was a TA for an undergraduate level intro media class, w ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Most of my teaching stile I adopted from my grandmother who taught mathematics in high school for 56 years and received three Soros Education Foundation awards, and also from my teacher of mathematics in the High School of Physics and Mathematics, which I finished in 1989. Their saying was: "There are no bad students, only bad teachers". I follow this principal and try to find the roots of student's omissions in knowledge of educational programs.
As a Saratov State University of Russia Graduate, I had, as it very common for Russia education, minors in Physics and Mathematics. After finishing the University I was working for three years as a Technology Trainer appreciated by hospital staff for ability to explain technology in understandable terms. After coming to US in 1997 and working as a chauffeur, I began tutoring among my colleagues' and friends' children in mathematics and phy ... read more
