A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is based on building an empowering relationship between teacher and student. The aim in my teaching is to make the student into an out-going self-learner and to teach the student positive ways of challenging himself. If I were to label myself, I would call myself a patient, understanding teacher. I look for tools and ways to reach my student, often employing numerous aids for a single subject. A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated with my Master's degree in Social Welfare from the University of California at Berkeley, and earned my first graduate degree in 1997 at the University of California at Los Angeles in Education. I taught 2nd grade in a bilingual Spanish classroom from 1996 to 2000 for the Los Angeles Unified School District. I also taught English to high school students for the Peace Corps in Nicaragua. I have studied foreign languages and speak Spanish and Portuguese fluently, and also speak some French and Japanese. Due to my past education, work experience, and time spent abroad, I am comfortable tutoring language arts, the social sciences, basic math, reading, Spanish, Portuguese, and French.

My strategy to learning unknown subjects is very close to the same way children learn to walk, by immersion. Everything we learned as children was assimilated through watching, mimicking and attempting. I believe personal experience and learning are very close and in teaching I try to keep that in mind. I find myself a very visually inclined learner and utilize that to help others learn, such as drawing or watching videos. I have found that audio learners do well when given analogies and kinesthetic learners do well with drills or acting out what they have learned all to mimic what their learning so that it might sink in better much like how when we learned to say our first words.

As an engineering graduate from BYU, I have extensive training in physics and math, as well as a solid foundation in how to apply these studies to real life situations. Problem solving is a strong suit, and I feel the principles gained from engineering studies apply to a host of fields where the primary objective is solving problems.
