In college prepatory high school, I was on the Honors Math track which gave me intense training in high school and college mathematics as well as Upper level science such as Physics. In college, I earned a Bachelor's degree in English literature and a minor in Hawaiian Studies. While earning a BA, I completed 60 credits of prerequisite courses in Elementary Mathematics, English, Physical Eduction, and teaching techniques. While in college, I completed many research papers in several different areas of study. I have extensive grammatical skills due to the writing and grammar courses included in my area of education. For 9 years I have tutored both elementary and high school students in English, mathematics, and science. As a parent of 4 children, I have a love for teaching in a variety of settings. I gain a sense of the students' interests and tie every subject back to something they are interested in. They need to "see" what difference their studies make. Learning needs to be a love, and I let my love for learning help to create that desire in the student. Once the desire is strong, the knowledge base grows easily. Patience and positive energy have served me well in tutoring younger students, and more mature students also seem to respond well to this approach. My teaching style is based on building an empowering relationship between teacher and student. The aim in my teaching is to make the student into an out-going self-learner and to teach the student positive ways of challenging himself. If I were to label myself, I would call myself a patient, understanding teacher. I look for tools and ways to reach my student, often employing numerous aids for a single subject.
