I initially got my start as an English tutor for refugees in the Chattanooga, Tennessee area in 2002. I then moved to China where I worked as an English teacher in for eight years returning to the US in 2011. My experiences ranges from university freshmen English majors up through non-English major PhD students. I have also taught in a community English program in China in which my students ranged from age 12 through 52. I have taught English at a private school in Ansan, South Korea for 1 year from March 2009 to February 2010. I taught children from ages 5-14. This was a full time job. I take close consideration of each child’s ability in the language and cater to his or her individual needs. I use all methods of second language acquisition in my teaching. Most of the exercises I use to help beginning are communicative methods. It's better to get them speaking and writing and build their confidence than to just use rote memorization or drills. If I think the audio-lingual method will help a more advanced student, I suggest and practice this method with them. If reading in the language with the translation side by side helps, we will practice that. I bear all forms of cognitive learning in mind when tutoring a student.
