I first tutored for two years during high school when a family friend asked me to help him teach kids chess at four elementary schools. I thoroughly enjoyed these experiences and developed a patient tutoring style that emphasizes critical listening. I continued to tutor in college, after a professor recommended me to the Central Washington University Writing Center. I trained with eighteen other students and was one of five selected to continue in practicum classes for the 2008-2009 school year. During my studies at USU I worked at Adams Elementary both as a Teachers Aid as well as a Mentor during the After School Program. I worked one-on-one as well as in groups of students grade k-5. This position was one of the most rewarding and enjoyable that I've had and would love to continue. I have also taught American Sign Language at the University in their ASL Labs for a year.

I try to avoid giving students an answer immediately, but rather try to pry the answer out of them with questions so that they can figure out the answer themselves. I see teaching as helping/forcing the student to think things out and make discoveries for themselves, not just being spoon-fed information. Of course, sometimes it is necessary to tell students the answer if all else fails (after all, it is important that learning is not a frustrating activity for the student), and rote memorization can be a valuable tool every now and then. A Little Bit About Me...

As a psychology major I was fascinated with how the mind works in all arenas. I learned the various methodologies used in teaching people and found in my tutoring that finding a way to present even the most difficult material in a manner to make it understandable is greatly satisfying. Through tutoring and teaching others I gained a higher comprehension of the material at hand and learned more about both myself and people in general.
