When I teach, I try my best to be open minded, and to give choices to the student, rather than follow a closed-box cookie cutter curriculum. I've found it's important to find a personal way of learning for a specific student. Variety is important, because every child learns a little differently. Some kids learn by listening, others by seeing. Some kids learn only when they're making things. Encouragement and recognition when progress is attained by the student is a great incentive.
I'm currently a student in school who has had a wide range of experience in various different subjects, specifically working best with mathematics, science and language arts in the elementary and middle school level. I like to instill in students a desire to learn. It makes it easier for them to have fun learning and easier for me to teach them new subjects. My first goal as a tutor, especially in reading and writing, is to connect with the student and find a topic that interests them. One of the biggest issues faced by struggling students is that they often don't identify with the problems. For a struggling reader this might mean not enjoying the subject matter of his/her book, and a for a student behind in math it may mean not seeing a real world application for the problems. I encouraged note taking by creating handout outlines of the information being covered and students inserted notes into each section of the outlines and I used physical objects to demonstrate how computer systems work and students took apart, put together and troubleshot their classroom computers. Midterm tests were take-home exams for students to research information and final exams were closed book taken in class with questions taken from the take-home exams.
