For the last three years I instructed K-12 students in environmental science and outdoor recreation programs, as the executive director of a nonprofit educational partnership. This involved designing and presenting lessons in collaboration with public school teachers. I received a Commissioner's Award from the Maine Department of Education in 2007 for my work with at-risk students. I also serve as the part-time Service Learning Coordinator for a local school district. In years past, I have also taught adult education courses in a foreign language (Norwegian) and in wilderness navigation. Teaching requires empathy for the learner's situation above all other things. I believe all students have the ability to succeed. In my experience, the most important thing to remember is that all students learn differently, and sometimes what seems like an impossible task just needs to be presented differently for better understanding. Relating the material to situations and applications that are relevant and familiar to that particular student is a much more productive and beneficial way to have students retain information.
