I have been educating people since 1987. I began in music education, which I taught successfully for 9 years, and also taught piano lessons. I then worked in special education for 1 year as an educational technician, where I tutored math, reading, and students with severe disabilities. I continued on a transitional certificate teaching elementary grades two and four, and most recently have taught post-secondary medical assisting students at a post secondary institution as well as teaching night courses in adult education in medical terminology and medical transcription. I am currently a Biology Major at the University of Southern Maine. I have completed my degree requirements for my BS, I’m finishing up by taking an additional 9 credits this semester before walking for graduation in the Spring, May 2011. During my four years in college I have taken 11 laboratory courses, providing me with extensive knowledge and experience in writing research papers, lab reports and scientific reviews. I have experience in math, reaching a Calculus level; completion of upper level courses in Chemistry, Statistics, and Physics; a variety of liberal arts courses. I was an assistant girl’s high school basketball coach for two years, and have been tutoring high school and college students in math and science for two years. Improving the lives of children has always been a passion of mine. While my academic background has had a focus, primarily, in the social work realm, my overall philosophy for working with youth emphasizes patience and education. I have sought opportunities working with both young children and adolescents. My interest began when I tutored elementary age children during my high school career. I enjoy teaching high schoolers for a variety of reasons. Mostly because of how honest I can be with them. I enjoy teaching hands-on, real life application of the sciences in a way that students can understand the concept as well as the usefulness to them out in the real world. My goal is not to be the student's friend or even their favorite teacher, but to be fair and prepare them for what life might throw at them outside of the classroom.
