Experience Summary
As an engineering graduate from BYU, I have extensive training in physics and math, as well as a solid foundation in how to apply these studies to real life situations. Problem solving is a strong suit, and I feel the principles gained from engineering studies apply to a host of fields where the primary objective is solving problems.
As a volunteer in Japan for 2 years and also as an engineer with Toyota, I have developed comfortable conversational Japanese in both personal and scientific settings. I provide a "gaijin" perspective on how the language is structured and how best to approach learning it.
Teaching Style
As a parent of 4 children, I have a love for teaching in a variety of settings. I gain a sense of the students' interests and tie every subject back to something they are interested in. They need to "see" what difference their studies make. Learning needs to be a love, and I let my love for learning help to create that desire in the student. Once the desire is strong, the knowledge base grows easily. Patience and positive energy have served me well in tutoring younger students, and more mature students also seem to respond well to this approach.
