It depends on the student and what they are doing. If all they need is practice, then I will let the student do all of the work, interjecting only to give advice or to correct a mistake if the student does not catch it themselves. If needed, I will work out similar problems. If the student needs help understanding, I first go in depth why it works and why you do what you do. I then give concrete examples to demonstrate it so that the why makes sense and comes together with the actual application. Then I have the student practice to make sure they truly understand. From my tutoring experience I have noticed that most students who have trouble understanding a difficult concept do so because they did not understand a more basic prerequisite concept, so I try to help students "fill in the gaps." When working with students, I work through a few problems with them, and then I have them do a few problems on their own to see if they understand. If I see that the student does not understand some prerequisite concepts required to solve the problems, I make sure to have them understand those concepts before continuing with the current problems.
