Math is a different subject than most as it builds upon itself. When teaching a higher level math I like to start with a review of the lower level math used in the process prior to explaining the more advanced procedure. I am also not a component of calculators. I first show a student how to do the procedure without a calculator then after they have mastered the process I will show them the calculator method. I have earned a B.S. in mathematics. While attending Virginia Tech I would regularly tutor fellow students taking courses that I was in or had currently taken. That experience teaching led me to pursue a position teaching after graduation. I taught Algebra II, Calculus, and Computer Science at a high school in Northern Virginia for a year and a half before deciding to go to law school.

My father was my first math mentor. He graduated from West Point - and tutored his roommate John Saxon. John developed the Saxon method. The next influencer was Investigations - the math program used at West School in New Canaan, CT where I did my student teaching. That program taught me to do "break apart" math - which teaches math independence. I have done more substitute teaching at all grade levels - and often play "Mental Math" with white boards -which the kids love. They work in teams and get the adrenaline rush of beating the clock and the teacher. This methodology - has worked really well for AD&D kids. Teach it. Repeat it. Practice It. Discuss it.
