I have been providing tutorial services for more than 10 years. My first tutorial assignment was at Edgecombe Community College in 1993. I worked one-on-one with students that were having difficulty in College Mathematics, Computer Technology, and Chemistry. Within the same year I also worked at Nash Community College tutoring students in Electronics Technology and Mathematics. In 1999, I taught middle school math. Based on my college transcripts, which displayed my engineering math courses, I was immediately promoted to teaching high school mathematics. Most of the students I taught where underachievers, repeaters, or transfers from AP courses. I have a natural passion for educating youth of all ages and find joy in helping them succeed. No child is unreachable when it comes to connecting with them. I believe that all students have the ability to learn. The key is that all students learn in different ways. I believe in working through different approaches (hands-on, visual, creative, etc) until finding the one(s) that work for each individual child. I am patient and considerate of student needs. I try to make things as fun as possible, and I try to help the student understand by putting the subject in a way that suits their interests. I like to joke around with the students, because it puts them at ease, and it develops a relationship with them that is hard to come by. Without that relationship, the teaching is harder, and the learning is harder. I still get the curriculum across, but in a way that the student understands. I have taught all levels of high school English and all types of academic achievement within those levels. I am currently a middle school teacher. I have worked with AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) as well. I have worked with students either one on one or via the whole class to improve reading, writing, and test-taking skills.
