I like to be interactive- when I'm teaching I prefer to work through a problem with a student together the first time, letting the student more or less watch me. The second time through, we approach the problem with a little more weight placed on the student. The third time I ask the student to attempt the problem on his/her own, and I'm available for questions.
I have tutored classmates and friends throughout college and after in science and math disciplines. My younger sister struggled in school and I assisted her with all disciplines from grades K-12. First I would like to get to know the student and parents, focusing mainly on the student's interests and goals as well as how they feel about the particular subject they will be tutored in. After that I would have the student show me where they currently are in class and what they need help with. Then, depending on the particular circumstances, I would create a plan to get the student caught up and self-sufficient as quickly as possible. Even though fast results are what I hope for, the student would set the pace of the sessions. No topics would be overlooked and they would all receive as much time as the student needs to master them.

I find that the best way to tutor my students is to find out what they are struggling with the most in a subject and then helping them with the basics in that subject. I work with the student on the basics and then build up to more difficult material. I am patient with students of all ages. I believe that knowing the basics of a subject is always important. In college, I always had to know the basics to build on that knowledge. It can take some time to start at the bottom, but it's worth having the permanent knowledge over learning it short term just to pass the test.
