My comments on tutoring Chess : I learned the game of Chess many years ago and have had experience playing many times over the years. I know the individual moves of all the pieces and the general goals and strategies to use in order to win the game.

I have worked with children and adolescents for over 30 years in various capacities and not only have a substantial amount of experience in varying types of special needs, but have very good rapport with children of all ages. I thoroughly enjoy them and they seem to pick up on that quickly. My approach to teaching revolves around determining the individual needs of the student, their strengths and weaknesses, and their particular learning style. I also feel it is very important to engage the student in participating as an important part of the learning process, gathering information on their likes and dislikes, their perception of their strengths and weaknesses, and what teaching techniques they feel work or do not work for them.

My comments on tutoring Chess : Ive been playing chess since I was a kid.

I like students to understand how the material they are learning can and is being applied to everyday situations. So I often will talk about the big topics that have been covered explain why they are useful and then show the student how to perform various calculations or apply the nessecary logic to solve problems.

Chess is one of my top subjects! I have played chess for over a decade and a half, and have taught people of a variety of skill levels ranging from not knowing how to play to advanced strategies and thinking on your feet.

I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.
I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I have tutored people ranging from my peers to people three times my age, to as young as third graders. My motto has evolved into "Helping those who feel they can not be helped"

A Little Bit About Me...

As most people know, there are a variety of learning styles, and each student is a unique person with his or her own way of learning and being motivated to succeed. As a teacher, I always strive to know each student as an individual and discover how best to teach that student. I have had a wide variety of teaching experiences in many different subjects and settings and with students from Pre-K to 12th grade. I am flexible enough to adjust my teaching style to meet the unique needs and abilities of the students with whom I am working. Most of my students would say that I have a terrific ability to take a difficult concept and teach it in a way that makes sense to them.
I graduated summa cum laude from the State University of NY College at Cortland with a BA in Secondary English Education in 1989. Following that, I held a variety of positions in education including teaching in pre-s ... read more

I have six children of my own and know that every child learns differently, even when they come from the same family. I believe the majority of children can master the material they are presented in school, but it is a matter of time. Many children take a little more time to understand the concepts and master the skills needed to move on to the next level. Sadly many of these children aren't given the time to do it and are just passed on to the next level. By doing this they fall further and further behind until they become discouraged to the point of quitting. I desire to reach those children. Not every child is an "A" student, but every child has his or her unique gifts. I strive to help each child find those gifts and to do the best he or she can in every area. I like to get to know the child and find the best way possible, whether it be modifying a curriculum or my own approa ... read more

About my role as a teacher, I think that the main principle should be “teaching for understanding”. A teacher creates learning opportunities that engage students in thinking about important mathematical concepts. Facts and skills support such learning but are not the ultimate goal. A teacher not only draws on past knowledge of mathematics but continuously builds on and refines that knowledge during meaningful interactions with students and colleagues. Thus, her or his practice as a teacher is constantly evolving

I really enjoy seeing people learn new things. It has been my experience that when someone struggles to learn a new subject, the best method is to relate the subject in question to something more familiar. Patience and persistence are two very powerful tools. I believe in tutoring because it forces active participation. Once a pupil feels they can participate without fear, they can and will learn more effectively.

Having taught and tutored middle school to community college level students for more than seven years, I work to inspire them to be active learners. My BA in Mathematics and additional graduate studies in Mathematics Education serve to provide a rich understanding of this subject. Also, my seminary years afforded me ample opportunities through research papers, book reviews, journal entries, and essays to acquire good grammatical skills. I tutored at Pensacola Junior College, Tanya's Tutoring, and Sylvan Learning Center, along with other schools. Moreover, I taught adults Basic Skills Math at Delgado Community College and most recently at New Life Theological Seminary.

Earning a degree in Communications accelerated my skills in writing through Journalism, research papers and Rhetorical studies. Additionally, writing is something I enjoy and practice on a daily basis. It has been a number of years since I have tutored a child however, I would like to incorporate my vocational experience as well as my collegiate studies into my teaching practices.
I would love the opportunity to teach grade school children. It was during my formidable years that I can recall a young lady who impacted my education in a very significant way. Additionally, I also have very fond memories of several children who I mentored through tutoring. My innate enthusiastic nature has facilitated a strong desire with the children to participate in the learning process in many unique ways. I gain tremendous joy and satisfaction through observing this process.

Since high school I've been working with my peers to help clarify subject matter, as that was my favorite method of study. In college I tutored under-classmen in Spanish, chemistry, and political science. Since graduating, I've worked with college freshmen as a writing tutor and with middle school students to teach algebra and pre-algebra. I'm a very strong writer, and I've got a broad background allowing me to tutor in any subject through freshmen year to college.
My method of teaching varies with the subject. A spanish tutor and a chemistry tutor can go about things quite differently. I like leading students to find answers on their own so that they understand the paths they are taking. That method is especially helpful in hard sciences and math. In the liberal arts (poli-sci, literature, religion, philosophy, etc.) I like to work in the Socratic method. I'll challenge the stude ... read more

My teaching technique strictly focuses on the task at hand mainly for proper concentration. I value and encourage student questions because it demonstrates my knowledge and expertise about the material being taught. I do not tolerate immature and irresponsible behavior from a student because it hinders a student's progress when he/she is unwilling to listen or seriously apply my teaching towards the objectives he/she want to accomplish. I take into consideration a student's level of understanding for the material being taught and teach him/her accordingly.
