My comments on tutoring Chess : I learned the game of Chess many years ago and have had experience playing many times over the years. I know the individual moves of all the pieces and the general goals and strategies to use in order to win the game.

I have worked with children and adolescents for over 30 years in various capacities and not only have a substantial amount of experience in varying types of special needs, but have very good rapport with children of all ages. I thoroughly enjoy them and they seem to pick up on that quickly. My comments on tutoring Chess : Ive been playing chess since I was a kid.

I like students to understand how the material they are learning can and is being applied to everyday situations. So I often will talk about the big topics that have been covered explain why they are useful and then show the student how to perform various calculations or apply the nessecary logic to solve problems.

Chess is one of my top subjects! I have played chess for over a decade and a half, and have taught people of a variety of skill levels ranging from not knowing how to play to advanced strategies and thinking on your feet.

I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.
I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I believe the majority of children can master the material they are presented in school, but it is a matter of time. Many children take a little more time to understand the concepts and master the skills needed to move on to the next level.
