I have forty years of experience at the secondary and college levels, and in retirement I tutor elementary school students in reading and math and teach philosophy to retired adults. I have been a teacher, administrator, and counsellor in eight independent schools and a college. My teaching style is interactive. Children learn in different way, and have different levels of enthusiasm for different subjects. I think that the way to encourage a child's success is to identify the ways in which the students learns best, and to understand what subjects/topics interest them. I believe that you must approach education by meeting the student where he or she is rather having the student conform to your style. Therefore I embrace an eclectic style. Each student will present with some king of dominant learning style. They will be primarily visual, auditory, conceptual or experiential. It is my job to discover that style in the teaching process and direct my approach to that student. I taught with the Bangor adult education program in the early 1980's as a graduate student in educational psychology. I believe that each student learns in their own unique fashion. When I work one on one with a student, I first talk with them (and look at previous writing samples) to try and determine how best to tutor them. Some students benefit if I hide their papers and ask them to talk their way through the main points and arguments of their essays (and then compare and contrast what they said to me to their actual arguments in their paper to see if information has been left out or if there is excess information), and others benefit from reading their paper out loud to catch errors or awkward phrasing. I am a very patient listener and think that I empathize well with everyone. While student teaching I learned to pay attention to all of the students in a very diverse student body. I chose texts from a variety of backgrounds- the multicultural approach was both ideal and necessary in that setting. I then emphasized the similarities between the texts and the need for standardization in language use.
