I am a firm believer that if a student really wants to learn, and accepts a challenge, they can learn a language faster in a few months than most people can over the course of an entire school career. I don't believe in traditional styles that simply teach words and phrases, but rather I focus on the core of grammar. While perfecting my Spanish skills I began to develop a course to teach Spanish to beginners, and continue to perfect that course with a hope to someday publish. With the majority of my experience tutoring advanced level sophmores, juniors, and seniors in college, I am confident that I am ready for all levels of Spanish. My teaching philosophy is simple; I believe in providing a safe and positive atmosphere for students to learn. In creating this positive atmosphere I motivate my students by showing them that they can indeed, be successful. I help them move toward success by teaching content, but also building trust with the students. I am approachable and have a positive attitude; I take the time to learn each student’s interests which helps me relate to them. Building this trust is a fundamental part of the equation; it is a foundation to be built upon. I began my college career in the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota. During my five semesters in the program I was able to study calculus and physics. I am familiar with high school level physics and mathematics up to and including pre-calculus. After five semesters at the University I transferred to St. Cloud State University to study economics. I honed my statistical and grammatical skills by writing research papers there. During my time at St. Cloud State University I tutored at St. Cloud Technical and Community College. For three semesters there I tutored students in math up to pre-calculus (including trigonometry), statistics, economics, and physics. I love teaching because I truly enjoy seeing the light come on when a student gets it. I have had some excellent teachers in my life and have used their techniques to help students I tutor. English and education have been a passion of mine for my entire life. My undergraduate experience at the University of Minnesota Morris exacerbated this characteristic. While at U of M Morris I lead several study groups as well as copy-edited for the University newspaper. Grammar, nonfiction writing as well as critical analysis of literature are my strongest talents. As a fresh graduate I feel the need to be a part of academia. Tutoring is the perfect opportunity for me to strengthen my abilities while simultaneously helping students achieve success.
