When I first started college, I had no idea what to major in. I started taking creative writing and literature classes though, and found my niche in English. I enjoy writing, reading, proofreading, checking grammar and punctuation, and find myself reviewing billboards and magazines for errors. I've been able to put these skills to actual use as an instructor, tutor, and advisor for college students. I have taught Business Writing, Business Communication, and Keyboarding classes. I have also had a great deal of experience with public speaking and have played piano for more than 20 years. In the end though, it's a great joy to see a student "get it" and to help them realize their full potential. Graduating magna cum laude, I take education seriously where I feel that everyone has the potential to grow and succeed. I have a bachelors degree in social work and a minor in human relations where I was on the deans list/graduated with cumulative average g. p. a. of 3.6. I was chosen as a IV-E child welfare scholar through Saint Cloud State/University of Minnesota where I received additional focus/training in helping children in need. I worked with the Minnesota Literacy Council tutoring adult learners in basic math and reading skills. I attempted multiple approaches with each person until we found one that allowed the learner to make sense of the symbols and language. I encouraged the ability to work at the material until the learner could make it his/her own in some way. I also trained new employees each month in the use of a software program at a pharmaceutical company. Employees were required to learn the program regardless of experience and ability with computer programs. I was challenged to engage disinterested employees, encourage frustrated employees, and meet the demands of highly inquisitive employees while maintaining focus on the required information. I will ask a student some questions to find out what they know about the subject. I listen carefully for clues to potential obstacles the student is facing.
