Skilled teacher and writer dedicated to your success

I like to get to know my students and build a strong relationship with each one. I work to connect the subject matter to their lives and to the real world. I set high standards, but understand that each student will work toward those standards at his or her own pace and in his or her own style.
I taught high school English, journalism and speech for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013. I also taught a year in middle school, a year in community college and worked in administrative positions at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. I have worked with students at all levels, from remedial to advanced placement and worked in an alternative high school setting. I have received training in the scoring of advanced placement literature exams and am a published writer. I also have taught SAT prep classes.

I have had a variety of experiences as a teacher. I, at first, worked as a substitute for about 3 years. Then I worked as a 3rd-grade teacher in a private school for one year. Because of enrollment that position was cut. I went back to subbing for a time. From 2004-2009 I have worked for the Dallas School District as a personal tutor. I primarily worked with middle school-high school students. I tutored them both at home and at a computer lab on an internet program. That position was cut because of budget cuts. I am able to tutor in all basic subjects.
I enjoy the process of helping students to learn. It is a great experience to see their minds grasp a new concept or idea. I realize that each student is an individual and as such may have a different learning style than another. My goal is to facilitate that learning so they feel and are successful in conquering the lessons to be l ... read more

My undergraduate experience has given me both breadth and depth in academic subjects. The curriculum I've studied at St. John's includes 4 years of language (2 Ancient Greek, 2 French); 3 years of laboratory science (physics, chemistry, biology, electricity & magnetism, etc.); 4 years of mathematics (including geometry, algebra, and calculus); and well as 4 years of "The Great Books of Western Civilization" tutorial wherein I have studied philosophy, literature, theology, political theory, and economics. I feel very comfortable in a tutoring position in most academic subjects spanning from K-college.
I am most familiar with conversation, as a means of relating information and testing understanding. I think that a through understanding in any subject comes about when a student can recognize the important concepts, and how they relate to each other, and speak those concepts in words ... read more

I have tutored several high school and a couple of college students in first year chemistry. These include the typical areas of chemistry such as: electronic structure of atoms, the periodic table and properties of the elements, chemical bonding, nature of liquids, solids, gases, phase changes, stoichiometry, acid/base reactions, kinetics, metals and non-metals, complex and coordination compounds, electrochemical cells, redox reactions, organic chemistry, nuclear reactions and polymers.
I enjoy helping children, young adults, and older people too, understand chemistry and science. I like coming up with new approaches to assist in grasping complex concepts and breaking these concepts down to easier ways to look at them. My approach is to allow the student to explain area where they are having trouble or need help. This gives me an idea of their understanding of the specific area. My ... read more

Getting my Ph.D. in English has given me the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. During the last seven years I have been tutoring students at all grade levels, from elementary school through high school, as well as teaching classes in English at several universities. I have tutored children in test-taking skills (including math, vocabulary, and critical reading skills) for the SAT and for private school entrance exams. I have also helped students with their writing at all grade levels, on such common problems as grammar, clarity, and learning how to elaborate on one's ideas.
I have always seen teaching as a matter of reigniting a natural curiosity which all students have, and directing it toward an academic subject. My priority as a tutor is to help students feel confident about their own ability to master the material. For each student this requires a diff ... read more

I am here to help students improve in specific subjects and excel academically as a whole. My greatest attributes are patience, perseverance, and hard-work. I always arrive on time and I take work and school seriously. I will be a source of encouragement and support for my students. In a small way, I hope to also be a source of inspiration for my students as they carve their own academic paths.
I benefited from the liberal arts education I received from the University of Puget Sound, which offered a diverse selection of classes and an exploratory environment in which to pursue my studies. For two years, I studied Chemistry and Biology while also taking classes in the Humanities. I eventually majored in International Political Economy and obtained minors in Spanish and Latin American Studies. I have been working as a tutor at the college level throughout my college experience. I worked both for the local community college and for my self as a private tutor. I earned two bachelor degrees, a BS in chemistry with an emphasis in physical chemistry, and a BS in math with an emphasis in applied mathematics. I work in the TRIO center, which has allowed me an opportunity to tutor writing and English students as well as science and math. I can tutor math through calculus, chemistry, physics, and writing.
I love to teach students that want to learn. I have a lot of experience building confidence along with building basic skills. I believe that everyone is capable of succeeding in math and science classes, and will work to teach the child how to believe in their abilities in these subject areas. I teach through examples, and tend to ask a lot of questions, making the student come ... read more

I love watching the face of a child when they realize that they have mastered a word that previously eluded them. When I tutor a child in reading, I will ask them questions about what they like to learn or how they like to have the teacher teach them and then base my tutoring off their answers. This way, the child feels involved in the process as well as gains the knowledge in a manner that feels correct for them to learn. I have had much success with tutoring children this way. I love the chance to make a child a reader.
Since I was a young girl, the English language has been as important to me as breathing. I have tutored elementary school children thru the S.M.A.R.T. program as well as through classroom assistance programs. I am currently working on completing my Associate of Science degree in English and expect to have my degree in June 2010. I have gained a lot of experience t ... read more

I have taken many classes and seminars regarding personalities and teaching styles. I believe this is why when one of my daughters, now 16 years old, was having trouble in the third grade I pulled her and her twin sister and home schooled them through eighth grade. They now go to Santiam Christian where they excel - in fact the Admissions Coordinator told me that she has never seen kids do so well coming from a home school environment. It is my belief that when teaching you need to discover what teaching style best suits that individual and structure the teaching in that way. I have taught in Sunday School, our local Home School group and tutored my nephews when they were younger.
