A Little Bit About Me...

I want to help those who may not otherwise speak, vocalize their own narratives and cultural idiosyncrasies through discovery of literature and language. Empathy, which is vital to tutoring, is as vital, if not more, to teaching. I not only do my best to usher students gently through the writing process, I shut up and listen to their stories. To see a student light up at that moment of realization when they finally understand a concept, or to watch their fear for English melt just a little bit, is, for me, an immeasurable honor. I believe above all that patience is key in teaching people of all ages. If the teacher's listening and communication skills are focused on the individual(s) being taught, the learner will let the teacher know when they are grasping and/or absorbing new material as well as when they(the student) reach their capacity. I believe that in learning it's important to pace one's self, allow the mind time to digest new material, and in finding areas of learning that spark passion. Although I think periodic breaks are important, I also believe in advancing somewhat quickly(according to the students' abilities) and in using real-time examples and experience to facilitate and solidify learning.
