I believe that children learn best when actively involved and take every opportunity to make this possible. I have eight years experience in the public school classroom. The majority of my experience has been in fourth grade, but I have also had the opportunity to teach fifth and third grades. I am currently a high school junior. That being said, I do not have a degree. However, I am in the top 20% of my high school class, I take only honors classes, and actually learn the material so I can tutor a student who needs help. I have four children of my own and home schooled each one through elementary school and some middle school. They returned to public school for middle school where I then provided tutoring for other classmates. I know sometimes math as well and other subjects come harder for one than the other so I realize the tutoring session needs to be geared toward that particular child. One of my favorite skills when I returned to graduate school was learning why letters made all the different sounds they do. I love phonics! Whenever I don't have an answer to why a word is spelled the way it is, I make it my challenge to find out! I have used a variety of techniques to teach phonics: repetitive strategies, making it entertaining with drama or rhymes, or using manipulatives to build words and focus on the significance of each individual letter.
