About Me

Experience Summary

I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from UNC-Wilmington. I taught first and second grades for ten years in the classroom. While teaching, I returned to school to receive my Master's Degree in Reading (k-12) and certification as a Reading Specialist. I worked as a Reading Teacher for five years, focusing on grades first through third. I also served as a K-2 Instructional Coach. I have enjoyed guiding children through the stages of reading, beginning with letter recognition and book and print awareness, to successfully completing End of Grade tests. My most recent experience has been helping teach a couple students being homeschooled! What an exciting experience! Unfortunately, the family is moving out of state. Our one on one learning experiences were extremely successful! I’d love to have the opportunity to participate in homeschool teaching again!

Teaching Style

I have taught in a first and second grade classroom for ten years, and served as a Reading Specialist for k-5 for seven. I have discovered that the most successful way to teach a child how to read is gaining their interest and full attention, while observing what learning style is best for each individual child. While teaching I use an assortment of manipulatives, repetitive phonics instruction, and books! Whatever works for your child, works for me! This is my first year not teaching in the public schools, and I am very familiar with the assessments and expectations. I have led professional development on mclass for K-3, and have years of successful experiences in preparing students for EOGs. Therefore, I also keep the expectations required from the school in mind when planning lessons. References from local schools available.

My Hobbies

I am from Fayetteville and have enjoyed growing up in Cumberland County Schools myself. I have two children, a son in 4th grade, and a daughter in 1st. Due to the participation I try to have in their education, I decided to work only part time, currently through tutoring sessions. My husband is a leader in the community and law enforcement, so I am definitely a person to be trusted.

Other Comments

I prefer to tutor in my home, where I have all my materials set and ready to go, so there is very little distraction or downtime. I am currently working with two students, one in 4th grade, and one in 7th. I am assisting with the home school process. It has been an extreme success! You can reach me at suzannasw@gmail.com. You are always welcome to stay for a lesson, observing or participating! or participate in tutoring sessions. References available upon request. I am also open to online virtual tutoring. Like many of us, virtual learning is new to me. I have, although, witnessed a very successful virtual learning experience. My own son has been participating in one on one tutoring sessions to learn a second language, and he loves it!

Subject Commentary

ADD/ADHD Proficiency: Expert
I have experienced personal situations in which ADHD has made a task more challenging. I have a great understanding of ADHD and how it can make schoolwork more difficult. One thing I always remember is that it is not the child's fault.
Basic Learning Skills Proficiency: Expert
I have taught elementary students for 17 years.
Elementary Proficiency: Expert
I have taught elementary grades for 17 years.
Elementary Grammar Proficiency: Expert
Having taught elementary school for 17 years, I am very experienced in this area.
Elementary Math Proficiency: Experienced
I am currently helping homeschool a 7th grader in math, and I’m really enjoying the review! My student and I often explore problems together, which she says helps her better understand the skill. Would love to tutor more math!
Elementary Phonics Proficiency: Expert
As I described earlier in the spelling section, I love phonics! Phonics and spelling is basically the same skill: using letters and their sounds to build words (with the exception of high frequency words)
Elementary Reading Proficiency: Expert
I am a certified Reading Specialist, with almost seventeen years of experience teaching reading in elementary grades.
Elementary Study Skills Proficiency: Expert
As a reading Specialist, I have had the opportunity to help individual students. I find the student's strengths and try to build from that.
Elementary Vocabulary Proficiency: Expert
17 years of experience in elementary schools. I have done extensive research on the most commonly used vocabulary used in current assessments.
Homework Help Proficiency: Expert
One thing I have learned from my own son, is that a child is much more likely to willingly complete work for their teacher than their parent! One helpful hint I use with my own child is playing soft classical music in the background.
Reading This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
I love to teach children how to read! I have seen different strategies work best for different children. We all learn best in different ways!
Reading Comprehension This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
The goal of reading is understanding written print. I have spent many years as a Reading Specialist working with small groups on their comprehension. Many were having difficulty in their assessments. Whether in K-2 or preparing for benchmark tests in 3-5, I take comprehension one step at a time. I also plan according to students' interests, which always helps understanding the written print!
Spelling This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
One of my favorite skills when I returned to graduate school was learning why letters made all the different sounds they do. I love phonics! Whenever I don't have an answer to why a word is spelled the way it is, I make it my challenge to find out! I have used a variety of techniques to teach phonics: repetitive strategies, making it entertaining with drama or rhymes, or using manipulatives to build words and focus on the significance of each individual letter.
Test Preparation Proficiency: Expert
I love EOGs!!! As a child, I did terrible on these standardized tests. I think that is why I am successful in helping to prepare students for EOGs. I understand how difficult it can be. I also have updated information on recently released tests, which helps me know exactly how I should prepare my students.
Testing Skills Proficiency: Expert
I have spent many years working with small groups in k-5 preparing them with skills and strategies to use on their specific assessment. For students in k-3 who are being tested using mClass and Reading 3D, I have worked as part of the "Assessment Team", and also provided professional development for teachers. I have also spent many years working with students in grades 3-5, helping prepare them for eog's. I have collected many materials throughout the years and studied closely the best ways to help prepare for eogs.
Testing Strategies Proficiency: Expert
Testing skills and strategies go hand in hand. As previously stated, I am extremely knowledgeable of the assessments required for k-5 students in public schools. Since this is my first year not working, my knowledge is also current.
