I think that a through understanding in any subject comes about when a student can recognize the important concepts, and how they relate to each other, and speak those concepts in words which they understand--while gaining the vocabulary and proficiency as each subject demands. I strongly believe that an education that leads with concepts instead of rote is the surest route to lifelong success. This is certainly the method that worked for me, and I find that, without the conceptual grounding, a student will not get as much out of necessary practice exercises. Thus, when I am working with a student on a subject, I tend to approach the concept foremost, creatively using a wide range of examples and descriptions to elucidate it.
