Poetry is one of my top subjects!

I have a lot of experience tutoring elementary children, ages 6-11. I have a bit of experience teaching middle schoolers and high schoolers, though not as much as elementary. I am currently an Education major with a minor in history. I am also considering a degree in music and English. Generally I tutor in reading and writing. I have some in science but I'm much more in the creative arts field. Helping children get a love for learning is very important to me and I can't wait to help anyone willing to learn.

Over the last 7 years I have been either working with youth or working to make myself a stronger reader, writer, and teacher. My experience includes two years of work as a nanny, during which I was responsible for scheduling activities, providing sound moral guidance, and tutoring my charge in all of her school subjects. While attending Kutztown University in pursuit of an Education degree I took every opportunity to work with high school students. At I-LEAD Charter School in Reading, Pennsylvania, I worked one-on-one with a reading specialist to help struggling readers improve their basic literacy skills. I have taught private music lessons since 2006. My primary instrument is piano. I have tutored English, Math and Science for the last 3 years. My students have achieved fantastic results. Although I do not teach to tests or scores of any kind, but only to the needs I see in the student, I have been amazed at how quickly t it reflects on their scores, and more importantly, on their self-confidence and motivation. As a strong advocate of public education, I believe in supporting our educational system. I have been told my effectiveness as a substitute teacher was the result of my respect for the students and my unshakable calmness and patience. Even as a sub, I enjoyed encouraging a love of learning in the students and a sense of curiosity. I also believe that each student has the capacity to work toward achievable goals. A Little Bit About Me...

After receiving my BS I taught high school English for nine years in Vermont and Massachusetts. I earned my MED in 1985 and served as an administrator at both the high school and elementary school levels. I've taught emotionally disturbed children and middle school ESL students in Santa Fe. Most recently I have been tutoring elementary students in language arts and math. For the past five years I've also tutored language arts and math to 1st grade through middle school students after school.
My teaching style is to make learning fun. I like to bring materials to the lesson that match a student's interest and still build necessary skills. My middle school students became experts at poetry and grammar with daily competitions. Practice is imperative to learning, is my theory, and the key to the success I've had with students.
