A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught private music lessons since 2006. My primary instrument is piano. I have tutored English, Math and Science for the last 3 years. My students have achieved fantastic results. Although I do not teach to tests or scores of any kind, but only to the needs I see in the student, I have been amazed at how quickly t it reflects on their scores, and more importantly, on their self-confidence and motivation. My favorite subject is reading. I am bilingual in English and Spanish.

Student centered and humanistic, I seek to find the student's ways of knowing and help them to build from their own starting point. I heavily endorse active reading and listening and value discussion and project-based learning. My ultimate goal is to help students to realize that they are often capable of much more than they give themselves credit.
Over the last 7 years I have been either working with youth or working to make myself a stronger reader, writer, and teacher. Poetry is one of my top subjects!

I have a lot of experience tutoring elementary children, ages 6-11. I have a bit of experience teaching middle schoolers and high schoolers, though not as much as elementary. I am currently an Education major with a minor in history. I am also considering a degree in music and English. Generally I tutor in reading and writing. I have some in science but I'm much more in the creative arts field. Helping children get a love for learning is very important to me and I can't wait to help anyone willing to learn.

A Little Bit About Me...

While serving as an adviser to the Peer Counselors team at Woodstock Union High School, I was also a substitute teacher from 1994 to 2001 when I moved to NM. I am a published author at Haworth Press/Taylor Francis Publishers of the book Pastoral Care for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: Healing the Shattered Soul. I have also been a newspaper editor and received an award from the Massachusetts Press Association in the category of Best Editorial. I have tutored my own children in English in an unofficial capacity.
As a strong advocate of public education, I believe in supporting our educational system. After receiving my BS I taught high school English for nine years in Vermont and Massachusetts. I earned my MED in 1985 and served as an administrator at both the high school and elementary school levels. I've taught emotionally disturbed children and middle school ESL students in Santa Fe. Most recently I have been tutoring elementary students in language arts and math. For the past five years I've also tutored language arts and math to 1st grade through middle school students after school.
My teaching style is to make learning fun. I like to bring materials to the lesson that match a student's interest and still build necessary skills. My middle school students became experts at poetry and grammar with daily competitions. Practice is imperative to learning, is my theory, and the key to the success I've had with students.
