My name is Katie and I am excessively fond of literature, poetry and especially Shakespeare. When I was 13 years old I saw Romeo and Juliet and have been a literature addict ever since. This is why I am an English major who is now a couple of courses into her Master's literature program. My dream is to one day be a professor of Romanticism Literature. My favorites are Jane Austen, the Brontes' and Shakespeare as well as the romantic poets like (Byron, Keats and Shelly) but nearly having my English degree has introduced me to others as well. I would love to work with you, have fun, help and prepare myself for a gratifying teaching career in my future! I hope to work together. Passionate, sensitive, enriching, and fun. After all, we only retain what is worth it to us to remember!

As a graduate from the Oregon Institute of Technology I have had an in depth education in math, physics, and electronics with a healthy supply of technical writing. While in school I was able to help other fellow students in their math classes, much as I did when I was in high school. This experience, coupled with growing up in a house with two teachers for parents, has helped me obtain a useful teaching style. I like math because it's all about building off of fundamentals. Once a person has a good hold of the fundamentals, they can begin to apply them to more complicated problems. I find the best way to build up the fundamentals is to relate it to the student in some way. Once the material is related, the student is better able to focus and concentrate, which allows for a quicker and more firm grasp of the subject matter.

After graduating from the University of Oregon with a BS in Basic Mathematics and Integrated Science, I volunteered for the Peace Corps and found myself teaching math and science in a village school in The Gambia, West Africa. Upon my return from the Peace Corps I landed a teaching job at a Eugene Middle School and have taught 7th and 8th grade mathematics and science for the past 20 years there. I continue to promote mathematics education to the kids at my school with Family Math Nights, math competitions both local and national, and by blogging and newsletters. I obtained my MS in Elementary Education from Western Oregon University in 1993. I believe that all of my students can learn the material presented to them, if it is presented in the correct way. I have taken a lot of time to learn about the brain research that has been done to discover how different students learn. I like
