Sociology is one of my top subjects!

I have tutored children off and on since I was in high school. More recently, my time has been spent volunteering with The Giving Tree, where I tutored inner-city children after school and helped organize activities (museums, zoo, etc.) on the weekends. I am currently in the final stages of my dissertation for a doctorate in psychology, so I am always actively learning, too. My aspirations are to become a professor in higher education upon acquiring my Ph.D..
I think teaching styles should differ based on the preferred learning style of the student. The teaching style should play on the strengths and preferences of that particular student. I am known for my amazing listening skills and empathy. I am a student of Non-violent communication and use it at every opportunity. I love to teach with symbolism and visual techniques. Most of all I find it is important to listen to the child and see how they need to be taught and adjust to their comfort levels. I feel that patience and compassion for different cultures is also key to the student’s success.
I recently graduated with honors from PSU and have a strong desire to work with and help children. I have a passion for literacy and believe it has the power to change lives. The curriculum I've studied at St. John's includes 4 years of language (2 Ancient Greek, 2 French); 3 years of laboratory science (physics, chemistry, biology, electricity & magnetism, etc.); 4 years of mathematics (including geometry, algebra, and calculus); and well as 4 years of "The Great Books of Western Civilization" tutorial wherein I have studied philosophy, literature, theology, political theory, and economics. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching philosophy is first to have the knowledge for the subjects. Then, I think you need to understand the youth learning styles and to find out where they are with their knowledge and then begin from there. Certainly some refreshing maybe necessary, but most of the time the youth is behind so the teaching would focus on helping them reach their potential and moving forward.
During the summers of college I was trained in Project Read and organizational skills. I then tutored youth from grade school to high school in math and science from grade school math to algebra and geometry the same for science.
