In my own experience, the key to learning has been to find a "critical link:" that is, to figure out an angle that makes sense to my brain. It is one thing to be exposed to a subject, and another to understand, remember and easily employ what is learned. This is in direct response to the "sink or swim" curriculum I encountered throughout my own academic career.
