My old next door neighbors have two children. One is a boy in elementary and one is a girl in middle school. I tutored the boy in reading and writing. He was able to read his first book on his own after a few weeks with me. I had to tutor the girl in math. she was taking algebra and was having a tough time with it. In two weeks of many meetings, she was able to pass her final exam. No matter what grade I was in, I always enjoyed going down to the ESE room and helping the special kids. I did what ever I could to help.

My comments on tutoring Mechanical Engineering : I can help with Engineering Mechanics.

I have done private tutoring of high school students in math from pre-algebra to calculus and in other subjects. I have also home schooled adopted daughters from lower grades to high school level, including teaching English as a second language. In graduate school I was a teaching assistant in an electric machinery laboratory for non-electrical engineering majors. My own experience with standardized tests includes having taken the ACT in 1971 with scores ranging from 22 (76th percentile) in English to 31 (97th percentile) in math with a composite of 27 (93rd percentile) and having passed the GRE in 1975. Other previous experience includes 34 years experience as a communication system engineer. My teaching style is to motivate the student to think for himself or herself. I do this by asking questions that leads the student to the comprehension of a concept or the solving of a problem. The key is allowing the student to do work and building the students confidence in their reasoning processes.
While studying at Daytona Beach Community College I worked as a Mathematics tutor for two semesters in their learning center. It was a very rewarding experience because it taught me patience as well as how to convey concepts and ideas in many different ways. Also being a tutor reinforced my mathematics foundation as I continued in my pursuit of a Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Florida.
