A Little Bit About Me...

I am a few years out of high school, and I've taken several college classes. My AP knowledge spans almost every subject. I can help with almost all high school level classes and below. The various sciences are probably my best subjects, however my knowledge of Biology is fairly limited. I have tutored a few High School Freshman before in a program called "Senior Mentoring" I have also helped out a few family friends to get the grade to graduate.
This really depends on the subject, however, I like to do drills to keep basic skills sharp, and to learn new skills. Each student is different, and will need slightly adjusted methodology. I'm also very open to suggestion.

I have taught ESL for 17 years to children and adults from all over the world. I have a strong command of language arts and am experienced at teaching literacy, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, essay writing, phonics, pronunciation, etc. I coordinate the after school enrichment program and annual play at Earl LeGette Elementary School. Having finished a financial planning course, I have also recently brushed up on my math skills. I have a well-rounded education and am constantly learning as I tutor my own children with their homework.
My teaching style involves fun and an active student. Self-discovery is the best way to learn and retain knowledge. I see myself as the facilitator; I give my students the tools, so they can figure out problems on their own and become more self-reliant. I want learning to be fun, involving games, healthy competition and active learning, so studen ... read more

I enjoy a hands-on teaching style, tailoring lesson plans to the child's interests and abilities. I have much experience teaching to children with learning challenges as my own son has ADHD and dyslexia.
After graduating from California State University in 1992 with a Bachelors degree in Child Development and Family Studies I taught and directed a school for a period of seven years before returning home to homeschool my own children for a period of ten years from preschool through eighth grade.

A Little Bit About Me...

My first visit is just an assessment of where the student began to get lost regardless of the age or level. More often that not, they have to memorize their fractions to decimal to percentage conversion from 1/2 to 1/12. Given this underlying knowledge allows me to focus on the subject at hand. I usually recommend purchasing a Spark Notes or something similar for the subject as a reference guide. I use examples from the book to review, and assist in homework. I do not do the homework for them, however, do ask how they will approach it before diving in. I add tips and tricks and different ways to approaching the problem. I also assist in anxiety control, study and organization habits.

I enjoy teaching and see it as one of my gifts. In all of my jobs I've seen it as my goal to help others learn and grow. I believe that everyone is a natural learner, everyone is curious. Each of us has a different learning style and I am sensitive to that in each person that I teach. I am a naturally calm and friendly person and I always discover something I like about the people with whom I work. I love to inspire and encourage and help learners experience the joy of discovery.
As a college graduate with both a bachelor's and master's degree, I have always been seeking excellence in learning. I have, over the years written many papers, reports, and essays, and consequently have learned and used many writing skills in many contexts. A Little Bit About Me...

As an educator, it is my job to recognize each child’s individual learning-style and adapt my teaching-style accordingly. I will build upon each child’s abilities and strengths, and work to improve upon his/her limitations. By reinforcing the student’s positive habits and capabilities, I hope, not only, to assist with the subject at hand, but to encourage each child’s desire to meet his/her full potential in every setting, academic or otherwise. Combining my comprehension of behavioral psychology and my vast experience with children, I believe that I am well-qualified to assist any child in attaining his or her educational goals. Further, I believe that learning can (and should) be fun, and hope to instill that in each of my students.
For the past 10 years, I have worked in my community, helping to better the lives of children. At age 15, I began mentoring young girls and volunteer ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a person who likes to teach one on one. I like to find what the student's interest is and tailor their teaching to that. I believe all children have a gift and an interest that is their inner dream and helping them find that or giving them an opportunity is wonderful. I find great joy in seeing the learning and improvement that can come so quickly when a child is taught on his level. My goal is to give everyone an opportunity or experience that they would not have with out me in their life.
I am a teacher who has learned through experience. I went from college to Kenya to teach in an international school for 2 years. I learned a lot about teaching and culture during that time. When I returned I subbed for 2.5 years in which I learned more than all my schooling. During that time I earned a master's and have gone on to move in the direction that jobs have come.I taught SPED f ... read more

Statement of Teaching Style I feel that all learners should have access to the highest quality education possible. The object of education is to provide each student with the tools that will help them develop their individual talents. All students should be given an opportunity in a safe educational setting to demonstrate their talents. This opportunity also means giving every student a chance to show their full potential. Instructors must have a pleasant and enthusiastic attitude. Instructors must be accepting of all students regardless of ethnic background or other personal factors. An instructor should use a variety of instructional methods and delivery techniques to facilitate the learning process.

I begin a lesson by asking a student what he or she knows about the topic. If they have any familiarity with the topic I ask about it and confirm or correct their preconceptions. If the subject lends itself to a real-world example or demonstration, I would offer this for thought. Finally I teach the core concept, connecting it to other concepts already understood by the student. There is usually more than one way to teach a concept. I take into account the learning style of the student. Written or diagrammatic methods might be more effective than verbal explanations. Pnemonics can be useful, but only if the underlying concepts are first taught.

Knowledge and skills are most permanent when we discover and create for ourselves, so I like to be a guide that leads the student to their own conclusions, rather than take over and lecture. I will be there to direct and support the student; I like when the student works at the board or on the paper instead of me, so that they retain what is being taught. I am very patient, and will work with the student on a subject until it is truly understood, and for more algorithmic tasks, until the student can quickly produce the correct answer.
Tutoring my fellow classmates was an integral part of my college experience. At Yuba College, I tutored math and chemistry in the College Success Center for two school years. I love to teach, there is nothing more self rewarding then helping a person who is struggling to achieve something and helping them with their goals. I believe all students can find academic success somewhere if given the correct opportunities and surroundings. I firmly believe that I have been educated by some of the best and these educators have made a world of difference in my life and expectations. I would like to help students in the same way my educators helped me.

I emphasize meaning in my instructional style. Rather than, say, inculcate a formula for comma us, I try to convey how comma use provides meaningful structure to an idea, i.e. the sentence. In the larger sphere of things, I believe in showing a student how a piece of literature--which may well include his or her own writing--is meaningful to himself. When this is accomplished, I have found that the "meaning" of the work provides the necessary impetus to motivate the student. As academic success is so inextricably linked with qualities such as interest and pertinacity, I emphasize the root cause: meaning.
